Pericles
Hudson Shakespeare
Company
By William Shakespeare
Directed by Jon Ciccarelli
Fight Choreography by Michael Hagins
For the second showing of the 2006 summer season we turned to a Shakespeare play of a dubious reputation. Each summer season we strive to produce at least one lesser known work to expose audiences to the range of plays that they might normally see. "Pericles" is one of two accepted works that was not published in the first collected works of Shakespeare known as the First Folio although it was acknowledged during Shakespeare's lifetime. The play follows Prince Pericles of Tyre from young adulthood to middleage falling in love with the beautiful Thaisa and fathering a daughter named Marina only to lose and find them again in the most unexpected, comical and touching ways. Gods, tournements, shipwrecks, brothels chastitiy and a resurrected author make for wonderful adventure story that sparked a new direction in Shakespeare's late plays.
