Coriolanus
Hudson Shakespeare
Company
By William Shakespeare
Directed by Rich Warren
For the second installment of the 2004 Shakespeare festival, HSC presented Shakespeare's most political oriented play and his final tragedy, Coriolanus.  following the story of man who holds rigidly to the life of war but found it proved useless in the area of civilian politics. Caius Marcius, a Roman general born and bred for his post by his ambitious mother Volumnia, shares the accolades of his comrades and superiors during Rome's civil war, but can find no such glory in the peace that follows.  After a successful military conquest against Rome's perennial enenmy the Volscians, where he garners the honorary moniker "Coriolanus", Marcius is pushed by his mother to pursue the powerful office of Consul. Here he would represent the common people, the Plebeians, a group he openly despises and considers inferior. His arrogance and loyalty to his mother prove his undoing and forces him to become strange bedfellows with a man who is mortal enemy.
