Hudson Shakespeare Company to perform ‘Troilus’
While area residents continue to wait patiently for the reopening of the American Shakespeare Theater, the Stratford Library is offering the best of the Bard all summer long.
The popular Hudson Shakespeare Company of New Jersey returns with Troilus and Cressida, the second of three scheduled productions this summer set for Saturday, July 25 at 2p.m. The show will be performed outside in the library’s scenic amphitheater. It is free and open to the public.
Ever wonder what would have happened if Romeo and Juliet had lived. Would their love have endured? Would they still be together or would things have fallen apart” William Shakespeare sought to answer these questions with a similar couple in his dark comedy Troilus and Cressida.
Set during the Trojan War, Troilus (Hugo Salazar), a prince of Troy is passionately in love with the beautiful and mature minded Cressida (Stephanie Jones). As an encounter brokered by father figure uncle Pandar (Stephen Bidwell), the two soon are torn apart by the ongoing war with the Greeks. Though each swears devotion to the other the course of their love doesn’t run as smoothly as expected.
Each year Hudson Shakespeare Company seeks to perform some of the Bard’s lesser known works such as last month’s library offering of The Winter’s Tale, to showcase some hidden gems that are often under-produced. The comedy will be followed by the fun-filled Merry Wives of Windsor on August 22nd. Patrons should have a lawn chair or blanket to spread in the amphitheater prior to the 2 p.m. show time. In the event of rain, the play will be presented in the library’s air-conditioned Lovell Room. Further information is available at 203-385-4162 or www.stratfordlibrary.org
