"Forget Manhattan! Come to Jersey City and Enjoy Yourself for Free

Being so close to the Big Apple, Jersey City, New Jersey, doesn't exactly race to the top of the "Fun Places to Visit" list. That, however, is truly a shame, because there really are quite a few events - free! - going
on across the Hudson River. A $1.75 ride on the PATH ($3.50 roundtrip) is all you need to escape Manhattan's high-price madness.

So where do you want to start? With a bit of culture? The Hudson Shakespeare Company is performing "The Merry Wives of Windsor" on August 20th at 7:00p in Van Vorst Park. Their "Lysistrata" in Hamilton Park five years ago was absolutely fantastic, so this upcoming performance shouldn't disappoint. For more information, visit www.hudsonshakespeare.org.

June 29th kicked off the "I Love Jersey City: Everybody Counts" exhibit at the Jersey City Museum at 350 Montgomery Street (www.jerseycitymuseum.org). The entire exhibit is a photo montage of Jersey City residents on display for all to see, and runs until December 20th. The opening reception is July 30th from 6:00 - 8:00p.

Then there's the "Free Summerfest Concerts" series in Liberty State Park, Jersey City's answer to Central Park. Connoisseurs of fine music are invited to come down every Tuesday night and Sunday afternoon and relax to the sounds of Ray Goodman & Brown and Gordon James (7/28), the Harlem Renaissance Orchestra (8/9), and Ambrosia (8/23). For the complete schedule, go to www.folsp.org. The series is presented by the Jersey City Division of Cultural Affairs.
