Fort Lee Theater Program Is No "Comedy Of Errors"
April 11, 2008
Fort Lee High School's auditorium looked more like the 16th century, as the Hudson Shakespeare Company took center stage to perform “The Comedy of Errors” as part of the Fort Lee Office of Cultural & Heritage Affair's high school outreach program.
"We're trying to create a real arts community in Fort Lee," said Fort Lee's Office of Cultural and Heritage Affairs administrator Tommy Meyers.
The slapstick comedy is William Shakespeare's shortest play, running less than 90 minutes, and tells the story of two sets of identical twins whose identity is constantly mistaken.
"What we wanted to do is give them something comedic that is not usually covered in the school curriculum," said John Ciccarelli, the Artistic Director of the Hudson Shakespeare Company.
More than 150 students are enrolled in the drama department.
The school's theater director Jodi Etra hoped this performance will give future performers a taste and hunger for theater production.
"They have access to music, they don't have any access to drama or theater in Fort Lee yet. So, we want to bring that in," said Etra.
"I don't think people realize the beauty or significance of just theater productions or the magnificence of Shakespeare itself," said Fort Lee High School junior Jasmine Carrington.
"I want to see some of these kids say hey I can do that and go out and do it," said Hudson Shakespeare Company founder L. Robert Johnson. "That's the only reward I get, is that we're preparing the next generation."
The curtain will rise once again on “The Comedy of Errors” on Shakespeare's Birthday - April 23rd.
The public performance starts at 7 p.m in the school auditorium.
Tickets are $5, with all proceeds going towards the Drama Department.
