Friends, Romans, countrymen and, in particular, Hackensack High School students recently gathered at the Hudson Shakespeare Company’s production of Julius Caesar at the Hackensack Cultural Arts Center. The show was staged as a part of the annual Shakespeare in the Schools program held from March 26 to 28 and featured an all-female cast. A different school group visited the show each of the three mornings. A question and answer session was held after each showing where the students got a chance to discuss the show and its unique interpretation. Reactions were varied, but on the whole, students enjoyed the interesting take on the play. The boys were particularly intrigued by the frequent sword fighting which was done with period weapons. The play was not adapted to the female actresses. Instead, the roles were played as written originally by Shakespeare.
Caesar was played by Jaqueline Lynch, Marc Antony by Kaitlyn Riordan, Brutus by Angela Liao and Cassius by Sarah Bowles. The actresses were dressed in a blend of Roman and modern style. They wore tunics and capes along with jeans and boots. This was the third year that Hudson Shakespeare Company has been hosting Shakespeare in the Schools. It aims to promote the playwright’s works among students and increase appreciation for the theater. The Hudson Shakespeare Company will be performing "The Merchant of Venice" in June, "The Two Noble Kinsmen" in July and "Romeo and Juliet" in August.
